Founded in 2016, Mint Mobile functions as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) on T-Mobile’s cellular network, which means it uses T-Mobile’s network but isn’t owned by the company.

Mint Mobile has been recognized within the industry and has gained a positive reputation. Its wide variety of service offerings include fixed and unlimited data plans, family plans, international calling and roaming, and Wi-Fi calling and texting.

Popular Cell Phone Plans

Best for consumers who:

  • Want a low-cost wireless plan

  • Don’t want to buy a new phone to begin the plan

  • Prefer prepaid options vs. a monthly phone bill

  • Want access to 5G network without extra fees

Not recommended for consumers who:

  • Need a large amount of data

  • Use a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) phone and wish to transfer it to a new plan

When it comes to picking a phone plan, a little research can go a long way in savings. Mint Mobile has a reputation for its cheap and reliable wireless plans. The Mint Mobile 4 GB plan starts at just $15 per month, an accessible rate for budget-minded customers, and the main reason the plan also places No. 1 in our Best Cheap Cell Phone Plans of 2022.

Customers can pay upfront for a prepaid plan covering three months, six, or 12 months and still gain access to 5G in areas where the service is available. However, professional reviewers caution customers on the three-month or introductory plan to be prepared to prepay for a full year to keep the same, low monthly rate. Otherwise, the price increases.

Unlike plans that require you to purchase a new phone to begin service, Mint Mobile also offers a “Bring Your Own Phone” (BYOP) option. As long as you have a compatible phone that is unlocked, you can easily transfer your phone line to Mint Mobile. With BYOP, you don’t have to stress about changing your number or losing your contacts – the ultimate hassle of phone ownership. Customers can check their phone’s compatibility online.

The caveat of switching plans using your own phone is that you must have a GSM phone. GSM stands for Global System for Mobile communications and requires a SIM card that can be transferred to any GSM-compliant phone. CDMA phones, carried by companies like Sprint and Verizon, have more restrictions from carriers. When switching from a CDMA phone, you won’t be able to keep your number and you’ll have to contact your carrier to make changes like upgrades.

Mint Mobile offers a seven-day trial that will get you $5 off if you do decide to upgrade to a full plan. To compare Mint Mobile to other cell phone plans that made our list, visit the Best Cell Phone Plans of 2022.

Our phones can feel like a lifeline to the world these days, so communication and online access is vital. Mint Mobile’s 4 GB plan offers unlimited talk time and text messages, making communication easy and accessible. The 4 GB plan also offers Wi-Fi calls and texts, free international calls to Mexico and Canada, and a free mobile hotspot you can use within your monthly data allowance.

The shortest and most affordable Mint Mobile 4 GB plan is $45 upfront for three months of service, which breaks down to only $15 a month.

The cell phone plan also comes with unlimited data on its 4G LTE and 5G networks. One thing that sets Mint Mobile apart is its free 5G coverage. Since the company uses T-Mobile’s network, customers with 5G-capable phones can reap the benefit of increased speeds in covered areas.

According to Mint Mobile, its 5G coverage map covers more than 200 million people in more than 6,000 cities. Whether you are using 4G LTE or 5G, you’ll have 4 GB of data to use at the fastest speed available to you depending on the coverage in your area. Once you hit the 4 GB cap, data will continue at a reduced speed.

Mint Mobile offers its 4GB for $15 per month which is $45 for three months. The three-month prepaid plan must be paid in full at signup. Originally priced at $75, the intro price for new customers is currently 40% off at $45 per line. You can add up to four lines to your plan and the per-line cost remains the same: $45 with the introductory rate.

The introductory rate is good for the first three months. After three months, the rate increases to $25 per month. However, you can lock in the same $15 per month cost if you sign up for a 12-month prepaid plan. If you’re looking for a short-term plan and not a full year of service, you can renew for another three-month prepaid period for $25 per month.

Mint Mobile sometimes offers deals. Right now, if you sign up for any three-month plan, you can get the next three months of service for free. Essentially, you would get six months of service at the cost of three. That breaks down to $45 for six months. Be aware, if you take advantage of this offer, at the end of six months your plan will renew for six more months at full price. You can visit Mint Mobile’s site for more information.

Do you have friends interested in signing up? When you successfully refer five friends, you earn a $240 renewal credit to apply to your next Mint Mobile plan.

Best for consumers who:

  • Need a large amount of data

  • Want unlimited talk time and text messages

  • Would benefit from a Mobile Hotspot

Not recommended for consumers who:

  • Don’t require a lot of data

Mint Mobile’s unlimited plan is perfect for the internet devotee. If you require a large amount of data to get through the month, the plan has a data threshold of 35 GB. After exceeding 35 GB, you’ll still be able to consume the content you’re interested in but at a slower speed.

This option is also great for mobile hotspot users who need access to the internet on the go. If you travel for work or like to be online when there’s no available Wi-Fi, you can use up to 5 GB on the mobile hotspot.

In addition to its data capabilities, the plan comes with unlimited talking and texting, free international calls to Mexico and Canada, Wi-Fi calls and texts, and a SIM card with three different sizes to fit your phone.

Mint Mobile requires that BYOP phones be 4G LTE and VoLTE-friendly to be compatible with the service. VoLTE stands for Voice Over LTE and is a new technology for voice service that allows you to surf the internet while on a call.

We suggest having a GSM phone that’s unlocked before switching to a Mint Mobile plan. If you’re looking to transfer to Mint Mobile with a CDMA phone, you may face some major difficulties. You’d be required to contact your carrier to unlock the device to make it accessible for Mint Mobile. In this case, another option may be to purchase a new phone through Mint Mobile.

Whether you’re glued to social media apps or love spending time browsing YouTube, your phone habits rely heavily on data. Data is used for everything from listening to your favorite podcast to playing games on your phone. For those who love to have news and entertainment at their fingertips, Mint Mobile’s Unlimited plan may be your perfect match. Starting at just $30 a month, the plan features unlimited talk time, text time, and data.

When it comes to unlimited data, there is a footnote we should include. All of Mint Mobile’s data plans offer unlimited data, but the data speeds reduce at a threshold. The Mint Mobile Unlimited plan reduces to 35 GB – a considerable jump from the 4 GB plan. A mobile hotspot is also available, with a threshold of 5 GB.

Like all of Mint Mobile’s prepaid cell phone plans, customers receive 4G LTE nationwide. 5G is also available in areas with 5G coverage, but customers must have a 5G-enabled phone.

Mint Mobile’s unlimited data plan costs $30 per month which is $90 for three months. The three-month prepaid plan must be paid in full at signup. Originally priced at $120, the three-month intro rate is currently 25% off at $90. You can add up to four lines to your plan and pay the same cost – $90 with the intro rate.

The intro rate is good for the first three months. After three months, the rate increases to $40 per month. However, you can lock in the same $30-a-month cost when you sign up for a 12-month prepaid plan. If you’re just looking for a short-term option, you can renew for another three-month prepaid period at the cost of $40 per month.

Like the Mint Mobile 4 GB plan, you can get referral money when your friends sign up for the provider. You can also take advantage of Mint’s current discount. If you sign up for any three-month plan right now you can get an additional three months for free. You end up paying $90 for six months of service. Note, if you take this discount, at the end of the six-month promotional period, your plan will renew for six more months at full price.

A benefit of Mint Mobile is the company’s straightforward pricing. Its Unlimited plan starts at $90 for three months of prepaid coverage. When you check out, you’ll also pay a recovery fee of $7.75, plus tax which is used to recover the company’s cost of complying with state and federal programs, taxes, and administrative fees.

At the time of this article, Mint Mobile is offering free shipping on all three-in-one SIM cards that are part of the Mint Mobile plan.

When it comes to deciding which Mint Mobile plan is for you, it’s all about the data. If you want a happy medium between the 4 GB plan and the unlimited data plan, Mint Mobile has two additional low-cost offerings.

The wireless service provider offers a 10 GB plan, starting at just $20 a month for a single line. For $60 upfront, you’ll receive three months of Mint Mobile’s standard benefits along with 10 GB of high-speed data on a 4G LTE network and, depending on your area, a 5G network.

The plan includes unlimited talk time, unlimited text messages, free international calls to Mexico and Canada, Wi-Fi calls and texts, a free mobile hotspot to use within the 10 GB threshold, and a three-in-one SIM card.

If you require more data, the 15 GB plan comes with all of the same benefits as the 10 GB plan but offers a larger amount of data for $25 a month. One of the benefits of Mint Mobile is that you won’t get slapped with a bill for data overages. Your data speeds will slow down when you hit your monthly threshold, but you won’t be left in the dark.

Note: introductory rates for the 10 GB and 15 GB data plans increase after the initial three-month period. However, you can lock in the low introductory rate if you sign up for a 12-month prepaid plan with Mint.

Data Add-Ons

If you binge one too many episodes of your favorite show and find you’ve hit your data threshold before you planned, you may want to add data to your prepaid plan. You can easily do so as long as you are on the 4 GB, 10 GB, or 15 GB plan. Customers can add data by using the Mint Mobile app or by texting UPDATA to 6700.

International Services

If you’re looking to go abroad, you can use Mint services overseas by purchasing international call credits and roaming credits. UpRoam allows you to purchase credit to use your Mint services overseas, including outside of Canada and Mexico. To place international calls, you’ll first need to load money to your Mint Mobile wallet on your account. Once you submit your order, the changes will be enacted immediately so you can call to and from the far-off destinations of your choosing.

T-Mobile, the network Mint Mobile shares, is the largest 5G provider in the U.S. This allows Mint Mobile to offer coverage in over 6,000 cities. Mint Mobile’s 5G coverage utilizes a 600 megahertz (MHz) low band signal that reaches cities nationwide.

Does Mint Mobile Offer a Trial Period?

Mint Mobile offers a seven-day trial period that features 250 MB of data, 250 text messages, 250 minutes, and a three-in-one SIM card. Customers can use the trial on their own phone but must use a temporary number provided to them by Mint Mobile. The trial won’t interfere with your current carrier’s service. If you’re happy with the experience, you can upgrade to a Mint Mobile plan using a $5 discount.

Does Mint Mobile Offer a Money-Back Guarantee?

All purchases made on the Mint Mobile website or app have a seven-day money-back guarantee. If you’re unhappy with the service or have a change of heart, you can cancel for any reason within the seven days of activation for a full refund, including fees and taxes. Note that Mint Mobile will not recoup your losses for any shipping fees incurred.

Unused SIM cards can be returned for a full refund within 10 days of purchase as long as they’re in mint condition.

How Do I Cancel My Mint Mobile Cell Phone Service?

Once you are outside of your seven-day window from your purchase, you’re locked into your Mint Mobile cell phone contract. Thankfully, the prepaid wireless plans are available for short windows ranging from three months, six months, and 12 months. You can upgrade your plan anytime with Mint Mobile. However, if you downgrade or cancel in the middle of a plan period, you’ll lose money since the plan is prepaid. To avoid this, you may want to wait until the end of your contract to downgrade or cancel your service.

Make sure you know the ins and outs of renewals before starting your plan. If your plan is set to auto-renew, your plan will renew with the same terms. Mint Mobile sends out a reminder before the renewal date so customers can make changes to their plan or cancel. If you don’t want to risk being automatically signed up to extend your plan, we recommend opting out of auto-renew by logging into your Mint Mobile account more than 24 hours before the last day of your contract.
