Tello is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that used to run on Sprint’s wireless network before T-Mobile acquired Sprint. Tello now runs on T-Mobile’s nationwide network, and offers prepaid plans featuring talk time, texting, and data at an affordable monthly cost.

Popular Cell Phone Plans

  • Good for people who want to make international calls

  • Includes free mobile hotspot tethering

  • May not be a good fit for a family plan

  • Offers 1 GB of high-speed data

If you’re looking for a flexible, affordable cell phone plan, Tello’s Economy plan is a great fit. The Economy plan comes with 1 GB of data, unlimited minutes, and unlimited texts, for $10 a month. This ultra-affordable plan is a great pick for customers looking for a simple cell phone plan with basic features. The plan renews on a month-to-month basis, so you can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your plan whenever you need to. You can use almost any unlocked phone with Tello, so you can bring your own phone to the plan or buy a new phone if you prefer.

Tello is also a good choice for customers who need to make frequent international calls. The Economy plan comes with free calls and texts to more than 60 countries, so you can stay in touch with friends and loved ones near and far. The plan also features a free mobile hotspot tether, which lets you use your phone as a source of data for other devices.

Tello may not be the best fit if you have a large family and are looking for a cell phone plan for several different lines. You need to purchase a plan for each line separately, and there aren’t any discounts for purchasing plans for multiple lines.

Tello also isn’t the best option available for customers looking for unlimited data. The Economy plan comes with 1 GB of data. If you exceed the data limit you won’t have to pay a surcharge, however your speed will be throttled down to 2G. While this may be enough for customers who only occasionally use their phone’s data while not connected to Wi-Fi, it’s not ideal for customers who rely on their phone to connect to the internet on a daily basis. While you can purchase more data from Tello, including unlimited data for $39 per month, there are better deals available elsewhere from carriers like Mint Mobile and Visible.

The Tello Economy plan comes with unlimited tax and text and 1 GB of data for $10 per month per line. Customers are required to purchase a plan for each line separately. The Economy plan comes with the ability to turn your phone into a mobile hotspot and connect other devices.

Tello uses T-Mobile’s data network, featuring 4G LTE or 5G depending on your phone. After you use up your 1 GB of data, your speed is throttled to 2G. Other Tello Economy features include free international calling to more than 60 countries, no-contract plans, and the ability to change or cancel your plan at any time.

Taking the No. 1 spot in our Most Affordable Cell Phone Plans of 2022, the Tello Economy plan is a cost-effective option at only $10 a month. Tello does require you to buy a new plan for each line, so if you need additional lines for your family you can expect to pay $10 per line per month for all plans.

Referrals can help you save money on your monthly plan. You can refer a friend with the unique link you have in your Tello dashboard. Once they place an order, you both get $10 Tello Dollars that can be applied to your monthly bill or phone purchase.

Tello doesn’t charge an activation fee and there is no long-term commitment. Customers are free to change or cancel their plan at any time.

2 Lines $39
3 Lines $39
4 Lines $39

Tello’s plans are streamlined and simple, so they don’t have too many extra features. However, you can purchase Pay As You Go data, texts, and minutes for both U.S. and international phone calls. If you decide that you need more data, texts, or calls during a given month, there’s no fee to upgrade your plan.

While a 4G LTE network is available to all Tello customers, 5G is only available for global system for mobile (GSM)-compatible subscriber identification models (SIMs) in non-standalone mode. A SIM card is used to identify a specific subscriber on a network. Non-standalone architecture (NSA) means that 5G is dependent on the 4G LTE network in your area. Customers can check if their area has 5G access on Tello’s coverage map.

Tello vs. Mint Mobile

Tello and Mint Mobile both offer affordable, flexible cell phone plans. With a starting price of just $5 per month for its most basic plan, Tello has a slight edge over Mint Mobile when it comes to price. Mint Mobile’s least expensive plan starts at $15 per month. Tello also surpasses Mint Mobile when it comes to flexibility, with no monthly contracts and the ability to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel a plan at any time. Mint Mobile offers three, six, and 12-month plans. Overall, though, both providers are good choices for customers looking for simple, low-cost cell phone plans.

Mint Mobile excels when it comes to its unlimited data offerings. The company’s unlimited data plans start at just $30 per month, compared to Tello’s $39 per month plan. Customers can access 5G or 4G LTE for the first 35 GB. In contrast, Tello’s unlimited plan offers 5G or 4G LTE access for the first 25 GB. If you use your phone’s data on a regular basis, Mint Mobile is the better option.

Tello vs. Visible

Like Tello, Visible also offers low-cost cell phone plans with a variety of attractive features. If you’re interested in purchasing multiple phone lines for your family, then Visible is a great pick, ranking No. 1 in our Best Family Cell Phone Plans of 2022. Visible’s standard plan, which comes with unlimited talk time, texting, and data, starts at $40 per month, but service costs are reduced to just $25 per month when you choose a plan with at least four people.

If you’re just purchasing a single phone line, however, there are cheaper unlimited plans available. If you’re looking for a basic cell phone plan and don’t need unlimited data, Tello has a clear edge over Visible when it comes to price, with plans costing as little as $5 per month to start. Tello is also the better choice if you make frequent international calls. Tello includes free calls and texts to over 60 countries, while Visible only offers free calls and texts to Canada and Mexico.
