About the team

The Web Services department sits within the Marketing portfolio at VU and is responsible for the design, development and ongoing improvement of Victoria University’s public web presence, and associated sites, tools and services. Web Services does this through the delivery of a program of ever-changing innovative web projects and specialised support services.

Web Services also provides usability & digital best practice expertise to stakeholders across all matters related to the digital presence of Victoria University. This includes support for enterprise web systems such as VU Connect, Intranet and MyVU.

Web Services is comprised of three teams — the Technical Development Team, the Web Content Team and the UX & Design Team (where this role sits). For more context, please see the org structure map within the position description.

About the Role

In this role, you’ll combine your expertise in User Interface and User Experience with your strong communication and people skills to make a difference to the experiences people have when interacting with Victoria University.

This role works collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team (see the org structure map in the position description for detail) to research, design and deliver excellent multi-device user experiences and interfaces for our public-facing website and other digital products.

To succeed in this role, you:

  • have an inquiring and solution-driven mind that gets a kick out of solving complex and large scale problems with a user-centred approach.
  • are proficient in using Sketch as your primary design tool (or you’re proficient in Figma, Invision or Balsamiq and confident to pick up Sketch).
  • have an understanding of inclusive design principles and experience designing to meet WCAG guidelines.
  • have experience working with established brand guidelines and design systems.
  • are able to work proactively, autonomously and collaboratively across multiple synchronous projects, while communicating where there are delays, blockers, a need to pivot or a better way to approach a task.
  • are an excellent communicator and are confident in presenting and clearly articulating design concepts, and justifying design decisions, to a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • can think strategically and consider the big picture, while applying strong attention to detail.
  • bring a ‘can do’ attitude and a willingness to learn new skills, work efficiently, can stay calm and focussed under pressure, and are able to have some fun throughout the day!


  • Gather, analyse and interpret both quantitative data and qualitative research (including conduct user testing) to derive insights toward inform design decisions and user interface optimisations. 
  • Design and deliver responsive, on-brand (using establish guidelines and design system), accessible (WCAG 2.0 AA) and engaging UI wireframes and prototypes (of varying fidelity levels). 
  • Conduct UX research activities including user testing, competitor reviews, A/B testing, flow charts, customer journey mapping, prototyping and heuristic evaluation.
  • Interpret and translate design briefs into a timeline of activites and tasks, and effectively manage time to keep to agreed development and delivery timelines.
  • Prepare, present  and explain insights, recommendations and design artefacts to stakeholders and project teams.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders to understand their business goals and objectives. 
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of user experience methodologies, interface design practises, procedures and processes within the team.
